Our first challenge was finding the 1936 Koch study. One of our members, Bob K4RLC sourced the study, but It was written in old technical German. Bob had the study professionally translated. Even so, it took many reads to absorb the substance and interpret its meaning.

For example, Koch never lists his character sequence. He tells us, “The sequence of letters chosen for our method on the basis of these considerations and other practical experience is given on p.56.”

In studying the Koch techniques we found the following:

 “The introduction of the other letters is done in such a way that the new letter is repeated twice at the beginning and twice at the end then scattered randomly among the other letters”

.

That was the clue we needed to extract the sequence. The repeated characters were the key.  Starting with the first listed L F C and looking right, we find KK repeated, then RR, and so on.
