1. How many CW classes does LICW offer?
LICW currently offers over 180 live CW classes and Forums each week, all conducted via Zoom video conference. Classes are scheduled across a wide range of time slots to accommodate members in different time zones and with varying schedules.
2. What types of classes are available?
LICW offers a structured progression of CW classes spanning Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Each level focuses on specific skills and milestones along what we call the Path to Morse Code Fluency.
3. How many instructors are there, and how large are the classes?
LICW has a dedicated team of over 100 experienced volunteer instructors. Class sizes are intentionally kept small – typically 5 to 14 students per class – to ensure a supportive, interactive learning environment with plenty of individual attention.
4. What CW teaching methods does LICW use?
The LICW Method – a structured, research-based approach that teaches characters as single acoustic sounds. This is the foundation of fast, accurate, and effortless recognition.
We build confidence through relaxed listening, early hand-sending, and guided QSOs, while emphasizing flow over perfection. Students are encouraged to miss characters and keep going, because maintaining rhythm and continuity is far more valuable than stopping to decode every letter.
With this approach, many beginners are comfortably on the air within just a few months. An overview video may be viewed here.
5. What equipment or software do I need for classes?
To participate fully, you will need:
-
- A computer or tablet capable of running Zoom
-
- A microphone and video camera for Zoom
-
- A CW Key – we recommend beginners start with a straight key, but our students are welcome to use a bug, sideswiper/cootie, or an electronic keyer.
-
- An Oscillator or the side tone from an HF radio. An HF radio is not required to begin.
NOTE: inexpensive CW Keys and Oscillators are available from https://cwmorse.us/ – Look for the LICW Combo Package Kit
6. Are there prerequisites or requirements for attending classes?
LICW is intentionally flexible. While we provide guidelines for each class level, there are no rigid entry requirements.
If a class feels challenging, you are always welcome to audit it – listen, observe, and absorb – until you feel comfortable participating more actively.
7. Is there a waiting list or a specific start date?
No. All LICW classes are open enrollment and run on a continuous rotation, with no fixed beginning or end. Students may start at any time and progress at their own pace.
This is a key differentiator between LICW and most other training organizations. At LICW, Morse code is taught as a skill-based mode of communication, much like learning a musical instrument. Skills are not mastered by memorizing facts or advancing on a calendar, so our curriculum is intentionally not time-based.
Rather than forcing speed increases or weekly testing, we focus on strengthening core performance abilities through The LICW Method – a structured, research-based approach that teaches characters as single acoustic sounds. This is the foundation of fast, accurate, and effortless recognition.

8. How long does it usually take to learn CW?
This varies by individual, but many students complete their first on-air CW QSO within 3–4 months. Progress depends on practice consistency, class participation, and personal goals.
9. How much practice is recommended?
There are no formal requirements, but we recommend:
-
- At least 2 classes per week
-
- 15–20 minutes of daily practice
Short, frequent practice sessions are far more effective than occasional long ones.
10. Should I use a straight key, keyer, or keyboard?
LICW generally recommends:
-
- Starting with a straight key
-
- Progressing to an electronic keyer as skills develop
We do not teach CW via keyboard entry, as the club’s focus is on conversational CW and QSOs, not contest-only operation.
11. How do I overcome fear or anxiety about learning and using CW?
This is one of the most common concerns – and one of the greatest benefits of LICW. Confidence comes naturally through:
-
- Regular practice
-
- Repetition in a safe environment
-
- Encouragement from instructors and fellow students
LICW prides itself on being welcoming, supportive, and fun. You are never alone in the learning process. This video may be helpful in understanding how humans acquire Morse code proficiency and why no two learners advance at the same pace.
12. How do I join LICW?
Simply visit the Membership page on our website and complete the contact form. A club volunteer will respond – usually within 24 hours – with next steps.
13. What does membership cost?
LICW operates as a donation-supported club. Suggested donation levels are:
-
- $30 – One year
